Parachute experiments with personnel were conducted by the US Forest Service at Winthrop, Washington, from October 5 through November 15, 1939. Various records and data were created, and a report issued on December 12, 1939: Report of Parachute Jumping Experiment, Chelan National Forest, Region 6, Fall 1939.
During the experiments, four Forest Service personnel took pictures: David P. Godwin, Assist. Chief, Division of Fire Control; Albert Davies, Forest officer; Harold C. King, engineer and pilot; and, Walter E. Anderson, Fire Assistant of the Chelan National Forest. Many of their original pictures, but not all, are in the National Archives.
Many of the original prints from Godwin, Davies, King, and Anderson were saved in an album by Francis Lufkin, who participated in the jumping experiments. Prints that were not provided for NARA archiving are presented here. With the combination of prints residing in NARA and those keep in the Lufkin album a greater pictorial perspective is gained from the October through December experiments.
