Description

Team photo of the Spokane Indians baseball team on April 9th, 1914 at Recreation Park, Spokane, Washington. This photo was likely taken before the first practice game of the season of the Northwestern League. The game was between the Spokane Indians and Washington State College. The real opening game of the season was a few days later, on April 14th, between the Spokane Indians and the Victoria Bees. Players from left to right: Melvin Speake, Walter Holke, George “Highpockets” Kelly, Walter “Sad Slim” Smith, Jesse Baker, Mike Lynch (manager), Jack Goldie, Roy Nelson, Stan Coveleski, Johnny Wuffli, Jimmy Lewis, Joseph Altmann and Dave Gregg. Unlike the majority of the team, wearing their white home uniforms, Lewis and Altman are wearing their road uniforms. These “road greys” were normally worn when on the road and playing games in other cities. On top of the color making a distinction of what type of uniform it was, the darker color had the perk of more easily being able to conceal dirt and soil, which was beneficial when not being able to do laundry as easily when on a road trip.
