Description

A jumper deploys his parachute above a forest. The parachute extends above and is beginning to open. This photograph was taken during smokejumping experiments in Winthrop, Washington in 1939. The caption reads "Okanogan National Forest - The jumper is just receiving the opening shock, and the canopy is drawn together by the elasticity of the shroud lines and canopy." This image is a mounted print used for reference by the National Archives.
