Description

Jumper Dick Tuttle models an Eagle parachute with Glenn Smith pointing to the rip cord for the emergency parachute on the front. This photograph was taken during the smokejumping experiments in Winthrop, Washington in 1939. The caption on the photograph reads "Okanogan N.F. / Jumper's hand at rip cord for backpack parachute. Observer pointing to rip cord for chest pack parachute required by Civil Aeronautics Authority for all premeditated jumps." The image is a mounted print used for reference by the National Archives.
