Francis died in the Veterans Hospital in Spokane, Washington, on June 30, 1973. He was born January 10, 1912 in Washington. He received an 8th grade education and worked in logging and for the USFS. At age 29, he signed on with the smokejumpers in 1941, 1942 but the records are not complete, and he was not named for any fire jumps in 1941. There are several fires in 1942 that lack jumper names.
