Obituary
Jim, 84, of Charlottesville, VA, died October 5, 2024. He was born on November 30, 1939, in Wyoming County, West Virginia. He lived his early years with his parents and his Grandmother Cook. Jim earned a bachelor’s degree in Forest Management from West Virginia University in 1967 after serving in the U.S. Army for three years as a Sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division. In addition to his military experience, during college he worked various jobs as a forest manager, forest firefighter and smokejumper with the U.S. Forest Service. He began his 35-year career as a forester with the Virginia Department of Forestry in 1967, married in the same year, and settled into life in Southside Virginia. Jim served in every “operations” job in the Department during his career, concluding his service as Deputy State Forester. Jim jumped at NCSB during the 1960 season.
