Darrell died in an Air America C-46 crash August 13, 1961, in Laos. He was an employee of the CIA at the time working as a "Kicker" dropping supplies to Gen. Vang Pao and his Hmong Army. Darrell jumped at Idaho City 1954 and McCall 1956-60. He is one of the four smokejumpers to have a "Star" on the wall of honors at the CIA headquarters.
