Photograph from a series held by the National Archives on the first African American Airborne unit, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, also known as the Triple Nickle. This photograph was scanned at the National Archives reading room at College Park, Maryland. The description at the National Archives reads: "Once on the ground Negro parachute fire fighters of the 555th Parachute Infantry wield shovels and other standard equipment in stomping out forest fires cooperating with the U.S. Forest Service in holding check what has been a serious fire season." Smoke rises around the Triple Nickle members.
