Photograph from a series held by the National Archives on the first African American Airborne unit, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, also known as the Triple Nickle. This photograph was scanned at the National Archives reading room at College Park, Maryland. The description at the National Archives reads: "Lt. Jessie J. Mayes of Virginia, is shown about opt make a jump from a Troop Carrier Command plane forest area of the northwest. As jumpmaster, he must know when to make the drop, and is in command of the men who will dig ditches to isolate the fire before it becomes widespread."
