Photograph from a series held by the National Archives on the first African American Airborne unit, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, also known as the Triple Nickle. This image was scanned by the National Archives at College Park, Maryland. Their description reads: "'Operation Fire Fly'. View from Pendleton Army Air Base, Pendleton, Oregon. The air base is the home of the Fire Fly Operation, a joint enterprise of the Troop Carrier Command of the AAF, the US Forestry Service and troopers of the 555th Parachute infantry. Below lies the town of Pendleton and in the distance are the hills in which the paratroopers operate."
