Description
Fred Shiosaki was born in 1924 in Spokane, Washington to Kisaburo and Tori Shiosaki. Shiosaki graduated from Rogers High School in 1942. After graduation, Shiosaki attempted to enlist, but could not due to the decision to designate American-born Japanese as "enemy aliens." Shiosaki then enrolled at Gonzaga University until his draft status changed in 1943 and he volunteered to serve in the United States Army, where he served as medic in with the 442nd in Europe. After the War, Shiosaki completed his degree in chemistry and married Lily Nakai in 1955. He worked for the Washington Department of Health after graduation. In 2011, Shiosaki was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
