Description

Photo taken of the opening ceremony of the 1915 baseball season for the Spokane Indians. This took place at Recreation Park in Spokane, Washington. This first game of the season was played against the Aberdeen Black Cats. There was however another competition that day, which was called “The Press Most Popular Fanette” and the winner of that competition was Miss Anna Berggren, most likely the lady seen to the right in the photo. The Fanettes were according to the Spokesman Review on 4/18/1915 “...lady enthusiasts” or in this context, female baseball fans. Miss Anna Berggren presented a shield shaped laurel shown in the middle of the photo to the Spokane Indians manager Bob Wicker, most likely seen holding it. This laurel seemingly represented the 1915 pennant, which are also the words placed on it. The Spokane Press, on 4/21/1915, described the laurel as “...a great shield of red carnation…”. The man standing to the left with a black suit is most likely Spokane mayor Charles Marvin Fassett. Mayor Fassett gave Miss Anna Berggren a season pass for winning the fanette competition. Later the mayor pitched the first ball.
