Robert W. Gillette World War II Scrapbooks

About this collection

The Images

The photographs in the Robert W. Gillette collection consist of mostly of images taken by Mr. Gillette, and official U. S. Army photographs. These span from 1942 through 1946. Mr. Gillette collected official photographs and took his own photos to document his career in the United States Army. The photographs were organized chronologically in albums by Mr. Gillette. It starts with his record of basic training, followed by parachute training, and deployment to the European Theater of Operations.

Biographical Note

Robert W. Gillette (1920- ) grew up in eastern Washington State. He planned to attend Eastern Washington College of Education (EWU) after completing high school, but World War II interfered with his plans. Instead of going to college at Cheney, he went to boot camp in 1942. As a member of the 82nd Airborne, Mr. Gillette participated in significant campaigns in North Africa and Europe. Following his discharge in 1945, he sought employment. Mr. Gillette is retired, living in the Pacific Northwest.
