Abstract
Artist talk by Shen Meyers
Description
Artist Statement
Identity and mental health are integral parts of the human experience. From gender identity to struggles with mental health, learning more about others is how we foster a world that’s safer for everyone. Shen Meyers’ sculpture and interdisciplinary art shows the facets of identity and the mind that people don’t often want to talk about. Shen discusses his artwork and how his experiences with being a disabled transgender man in a world that’s become increasingly more hostile towards his identity have impacted him. The relevance that his identity has had has made creating room for healthy discussion regarding what we don’t understand more important than ever. The gender roles imposed on men, stereotypes around OCD, body image, and anti-trans legislature evoke emotion in his work through surreal visuals and interactive experiences. The inspirations behind Shen’s work include Cronenberg body horror, performance art, stories from friends and family, and trans joy as resistance.
