Abstract
Artist talk by Rubie Jones
Description
Artist Statement
Rubie Jones' BFA exhibition explored the discomfort that female presenting bodies face throughout their lives. This installation consists of an alcove, and a cement room that is attached, each room acting as different layers of the body. With biological processes like menstruation or lactation she aims to make the viewer uncomfortable but also to question societal norms of why these processes cause a cultural stir. Using her own body through sculpture allows her to become her most vulnerable and personal self, to her it is important that these objects were once used by her. Within her work she also questions contemporary trends, through a historical art lens to find similarities of embedded misogyny. Jones explores being weird, awkward, and grotesque because those emotions aren't always shown or shown in a more polished way. Instead of perfection, she embraces the raw natural flaws in an extreme manner.
