Biography of Doug Beck
Doug began photographing with a small camera during his rookie year, 1970. During the off-season, Doug took photography classes and completed a degree in fine arts. He recorded a large body of work, documenting yearly Smokejumper crews, training in water landing and reserve deployment, fire and practice jumps, and daily life on the Gobi. Much of his work was developed at night, setting up equipment in the Mess Hall. In addition, Doug was responsible for a number of equipment designs that influenced the jumpsuit, pack-out equipment, and chute maintenance. The images here are a small portion of the approximate 10,000 images taken during his nine years at the base.
