Description

A parachute canopy is draped over a tree as a part of smokejumping experiments in Winthrop, Washington in 1939. The caption on the photograph reads "Okanogan National Forest / Canopy of parachute mantled on lodgepole pine to serve as marker for possible future deliveries of additional manpower or equipment and supplies to aid the intial fire fighter who arrived at the location of fire by this chute." The image is a mounted print used for reference by the National Archives.
