Abstract
In a bout of resistance training exercise, the majority of the time is spent in recovery between sets. It is not clear if a specific inter-set recovery intervention might improve total training volume (TTV) or positively affect the rating of perceived exertion (RPE). PURPOSE: To determine the influence of inter-set recovery on TTV and RPE during a bout of lower extremity resistance exercise. METHODS: Fifteen trained participants (males, n = 9; 21.67 ± 1.72 years old) performed three sets of unilateral knee extension to failure at their 10-RM across three testing sessions. Inter-set recovery interventions were randomized across the three sessions and included antagonist static stretching (SS), antagonist foam rolling (FR), and passive recovery (PR). Knee extensions were performed at a standardized pace, and RPE was assessed immediately after each set using the OMNI-RES. RESULTS: A repeated measures ANOVA detected no significant difference in TTV among the inter-set recovery interventions (SS 3214.09 ±1104.55 kg, FR 3153.18 ±1033.18 kg, PR 3084.55 ± 982.27 kg; p = .125). A 3 x 3 ANOVA detected no significant interaction between recovery intervention and set (p = .785); however, there was a main effect of set (time), with RPE after set 3 being significantly greater than RPE after set 1 and set 2. CONCLUSION: The application of an inter-set recovery to the antagonist muscle while performing a unilateral leg extension to failure did not result in a significant difference in TTV or RPE when compared to passive recovery.
