Abstract

The present study examined the relationships between athletic identity (AI), exercise identity (EI), and moderate aerobic exercise (AE), vigorous AE, and muscle strengthening exercise (MSE). Using survey data collected from 33 (female = 16) Eastern Washington University athlete alumni who graduated within the last 15 years, multiple Spearman’s ρ correlations were conducted to examine the relationships. Moderate significant relationships were found between AI and vigorous AE (ρ = .65, p < .001), AI and MSE (ρ = .49, p = .004) and EI and vigorous AE (ρ = .51, p = .003). These findings suggest that among athlete alumni, high AI and EI are associated with higher weekly frequency of vigorous AE and high AI is associated with higher weekly frequency of MSE.
