Abstract
"The Reality of Time and Love" is an electronic music composition created and inspired by my grandfather's and grandmother's reel-to-reel tapes, which were recorded while my grandfather was serving in the Vietnam War, and sent to my grandmother in lieu of letters. These tapes, representing artifacts of oral history, hold a special meaning in our modern world, as they are a unique lens to the past when communication was not instantaneous. This composition tries to encapsulate the long-distance relationships that many families had to endure during times of war, as well as showcasing the unseen feelings of a relationship currently enduring these circumstances.
