Obituary

Laird died May 22, 2016, after a nine-year battle with cancer. He graduated from the University of Montana in 1966 with majors in Biology and History. Laird jumped at Missoula 1962-65 and entered the US Air Force earning the rank of Captain. He returned to smokejumping from 1972-75 and continued with the USFS until retirement with almost 40 years of service. Laird worked with author Norman Maclean as a research partner on Maclean's "Young Men and Fire." He was a Past President of the National Smokejumper Association.
