Obituary

Rod, 82, died May 18, 2024. He was born April 5, 1942, in Darlington, SC, and grew up on Conway, SC. He lived in Kalispell, Montana, and jumped at Missoula 1964-65, 1970-83, 1985-88, and at West Yellowstone in 1966. Rod graduated from Sewanee, The University of the South with a degree in Forestry. During the winters of the 20 seasons that he jumped, he taught school, worked at a logger, was a ranch hand, a canoe dealer, and general laborer. Rod served in Vietnam with the Marine Corps and was severely wounded. He as a Life Member of the NSA. In his last two decades he developed an orchard-homestead in Kalispell, Montana, where he tested and grew some 400 varieties of apples. Rod was an active volunteer in several conservation and environmental organizations, and he assisted friends and family with their enterprises. He led canoe and hiking trips. He enjoyed friendship with many smokejumpers, hikers, canoers, and cyclists of Montana, and numerous cousins in South Carolina and throughout the country.
