Newell died January 30, 2009, after a long battle with lung cancer. After high school he worked in Alaska for the BLM jumping the 1963 and 1964 seasons. Newell drove logging trucks until his health prevented him driving. He spent his last few years working for Burya Logging and Trucking, a business owned by his two sons.
