Abstract
Artist talk by Jonathan Brooks
Description
Artist Statement
This thesis exhibition explores the relationship between memory, identity, and home through a series of representational oil paintings and narrative illustrations. Drawing from both direct observation and personal recollection, the work investigates how familiar spaces, emotional experiences, and remembered moments continue to shape individual identity over time. The paintings move between physical reality and reconstructed memory, examining the tension between what is seen and what is emotionally retained.
Large-scale works create immersive spaces that invite reflection and encourage viewers to connect their own experiences to the imagery, while smaller paintings emphasize the fragility and instability of memory through slow and careful observation. Accompanying illustrations function as allegorical narratives that explore themes of struggle, shame, healing, redemption, and belonging. Through painting, storytelling, and intentional installation, the exhibition considers art as a space for empathy, inviting viewers to reflect on the places, relationships, and experiences that continue to shape who they are.
