She is Cherokee on her mother’s side and Indigenous Mexican on her father’s side. She works in 2D mixed media to create a vibrant, colorful body of work engaging in food and traditional food ways. Food has always been a form of connection and dialogue in her family, evolving from times of scarcity and reliance on ultra-processed foods to an affordable, healthy diet that reconnects with the traditional foods of her people. Waahinhewin creates food and food-related illustrations with themes of food sovereignty with other related themes such as celebration of food, healthy food relationships, community gatherings, Indigenous peoples’ history and issues, trauma, and environmental justice and sustainability towards the future.
