Abstract
On January 1st, 1994, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation rose up in a rebellion, taking control of several cities in Chiapas, Mexico. Citing anger over the North American Free Trade Agreement as the catalyst for their uprising, the EZLN remained in armed conflict against the Mexican Military for twelve days, and would hold independent territory - Zapatista Rebel Territory - in Chiapas for almost thirty years after. But discontent did not begin in 1994, nor did their ideas spring from nowhere. This paper aims to analyze the various ideologies that inspired Neozapatismo - Marxism, Magonism, Guevarism, and the legacy of Mexican revolutionary hero Emiliano Zapata, from whom they derive their name. Using a combination of primary and secondary sources, this paper intends to explain the effect of these various ideologies on Neozapatismo.
