Abstract
Echoes over Big Bear is a watercolor, ink and prismacolor work inspired by eagles Jackie and Shadow, who have lived together in Big Bear Valley since 2018. They’ve laid over 14 eggs together, with only 5 having hatched. This piece explores the concepts of loss, mourning, and looking towards the future. My purpose is to invite the viewer to think about the relationship between the eagle and its chick and how we can relate them to our experiences with loss.
The colors that were chosen were inspired by cultural symbols of mourning as well as by the paintings made during and after World War 1. Muted tones of yellow, green and brown were chosen, creating smog-like clouds around the main eagle subject to draw attention to them. The chick below them is a bright golden color, rather than the white downy feathers that they normally are to represent hope for the future.
