Obituary
Curtis died May 20, 2024, in Portola, California. He was born October 2, 1943, and graduated from Portola H.S. in 1962. Curtis started a career with the USFS, beginning as a smokejumper. During his time with the Forest Service, he began working for the Portola Fire Department and was the Fire Chief for 40 years. He married Linda Tarantino September 18, 1976, and shared 43 years of marriage. At 11 a.m. June 3, a deeply resonant sound filled the crisp Portola Mountain air—the city’s air raid siren. It was reactivated for the first time in over three years to honor former Fire Chief Curtis Marshall. The siren was a poignant tribute steeped in firefighter tradition, reminding the community of his lifelong dedication. As the siren’s echo faded, it left behind a community united in remembrance and respect. The reactivation of the siren underscored the profound impact of Marshall’s 40 years of service and the enduring legacy he leaves behind. Curtis rookied at Redding in 1968 and was part of the retread program jumping the 1969-70 seasons. He is an NSA Life Member.
