Description

Photograph from a series held by the National Archives on the first African American Airborne unit, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, also known as the Triple Nickle. This photograph was scanned at the National Archives reading room at College Park, Maryland. The description at the National Archives reads: "A paratrooper of the 555th Parachute Infantry is shown jumping from a Troop Carrier Command plane onto a clearing near a forest fire in the northwest. His static line, upper left, open his back chute at the right instant after leaving the plane. In case it becomes fouled, he also has a chest chute."
