May 16, 1969
The head of Eastern Washington State College's chapter of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) speaks to a crowd estimated at about 300 people. The event, as reported in the May 21, 1969 Easterner centered around Shuck's rejection of the SDS's demand to allow African American athletes to display the Black Power salute (clenched fist) before games. This was one of five demands issued by SDS the previous week.
